I had Dyck Smotes trotting mare & rode to London …

Thursday [January] 11. 1582.

I presented my selfe to my L. of Lester who caused Mr Greene to set me at meat for his own table was ful.2 I was before Mr Alderman Barnes Master of ye Muscovy Howse, & Sir Francis Drake & others who shewing yt I was comended to them by my L. demanded what I wold ask. I answered yt I sowght not gayn but was glad to serve my countre or ther honorable howse or my L. & therfor wold refer myself to them, wch knew better than my self what was fit for me. This answer lyked them, so I was alowed xxli for my provision, wt great promyse of bowntiful consyderation. I pray god I may deserve it.
